Most modern platforms are designed to keep you scrolling. Their algorithms don't care about what you want to read. They care about coaxing you into staying on the app as long as possible. This leads to a cluttered mind and an echo chamber of content.
The goal of saladfeed is to provide a clean, private, and intentional space for reading. By hosting your own reader, you own your data and your source list.
Before social media feeds existed, the internet relied on RSS (Really Simple Syndication). It's an open, decentralized standard that allows you to subscribe directly to your favorite blogs, news sites, and creators.
Instead of a corporate algorithm deciding what you see to maximize your engagement, RSS gives you a chronological, unfiltered stream of content. Basically you choose what to read.
By moving your reading habits into a dedicated RSS reader like saladfeed, you escape the endless scroll, avoid targeted ads, and reclaim your attention span. It runs pretty cool on public web servers or simply on your localhost.
You don't need to be a developer to host your own reader and curate your feed.
Here is a quick crash course for complete beginners:
saladfeed doesn't need complex databases like MySQL. To run it, you just need a standard, cheap or expensive web hosting account or your own computer. Download XAMPP, drop the files into the folder, and open localhost!
Almost every news site, blog, or podcast has an RSS feed. Look for the classic orange RSS icon on their page. If you can't find it, try adding /feed or /rss to their URL.
Pro tip: Just search for "[website name] + rss" in your favorite search engine
Some platforms hide their feeds to keep you locked in their apps. Don't worry, you can bypass this!
You can use free tools like PolitePol to turn almost any stubborn website or social media profile into a clean RSS link for saladfeed.
